Dog fleas are one of the biggest hassles of owning a pet. An itching dog is an indication that your it may have fleas. Fleas can infest your home by getting into the furniture and carpets. They do bite humans and if you an infestation in your home, they will even jump on your legs – yikes!

Fortunately, there are a number of ways that you can treat dog fleas. Two of the most popular products are Frontline flea and Advantage for dogs. Both of these treatments, which you put on your dog, can kill fleas for up to a month on your pet.

What can also happen is that when you put the treatment on your dog, the fleas will start jumping off. If the fleas have been bothering you and your dog for a while, they may also be in the carpets waiting to hatch a new batch when the weather is warm. If your house is also infested with dog fleas, you will want to have the carpets and furniture treated as well.

I don’t like flea bombs, which are the canned flea treatments for homes you can find at the grocery store, because they only kill the fleas that are alive when the bomb is used. This means you will have a new infestation and fleas on dogs again in the near future. In addition, the stuff smells terrible and it’s may be harmful to breathe for you and your pets.

One of the most successful ways to treat your home to minimize future issues with dog fleas is with a product called Fleabusters. This is a fine powder that is brushed onto the carpet. It attaches to any flea larvae dehydrating and killing them.

Natural flea remedies to treat dog fleas are available in many different products. As a general rule, your dog and your family will benefit from natural treatments for problems such as fleas. The less you expose your pet and your family to harsh chemicals the better.

Natural remedies used to treat dog symptoms can be found in powder form, shampoo, tablets that you feed to your dog, sprays, and even rechargeable fleas collars. To find the right product for your pet, you will need to consider what’s easiest for you and your dog and also what is most effective.

A great book for helping your pet with allergies and flea issues is The Allergy Solution for Dogs: Natural and Conventional Therapies to Ease Discomfort and Enhance Your Dog’s Quality of Life (The Natural Vet). Fleas are a common cause of dog allergies and can cause rough patches of skin on your pet.

If your dog likes to have a bath, you can try the natural flea shampoos and conditioners. If you take your dog to the groomer, you can have them use a natural shampoo that you provide, or ask them to give your dog a flea dip. A flea dip is usually available at most grooming parlors for dogs.

Natural rechargeable flea collars are scented with natural herbs that repel fleas and ticks. The collar is recharged by spraying Insect Shooo onto it every other day for the first week. The Insect Shooo is pleasant smelling and does not contain chemicals.

Help your itching dog by treating fleas right away when you see any symptoms of fleas. Your dog’s vet and groomer are good resources for more information on natural flea treatments.

Herbal Dog – Dog Sprayed by Skunk

When your dog is sprayed by a skunk it’s important to act quickly. Having needed supplies on hand for this type of pet emergency is crucial to getting rid of the noxious skunk odor and getting your dog freshened up. Leaving your dog outside until it wears off is not an option! Your dog will need a bath with a shampoo or treatment that will get rid of the skunk smell.

While skunks can be a nuisance to your dog, they are a beneficial part of the environment. Skunks are gentle by nature and according to the City of Dublin, Ohio, 70 percent of a skunk’s diet includes insects considered harmful to humans. They are especially helpful at controlling grubs in lawns and eating black widow spiders.

Things to keep on hand for emergency skunk sprays include:

  • Natural teardrop eyedrops (such as Allergan’s Refresh Tears drops – at your pharmacy)
  • 1 quart hydrogen peroxide (3% strength – at your pharmacy)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda (grocery department)
  • 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap (Dawn or Joy work well)

Hydrogen Peroxide Mixture – Mix it when needed and do not store any leftovers. Mix the 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 baking soda and 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap in an open container. Rinse your dog with water down to the skin. Pour the mixture slowly on your dog and rub it through her fur letting it soak for about 5 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Towel dry gently.

If you’re looking for an effective solution that you don’t have to mix up yourself, Natures Miracle Skunk Remover 32oz works wonders to rid your dog of the oily, icky skunk smell.

If your dog is sprayed by a skunk, follow these steps:

1. Check your dog’s eyes to see if they appear reddened. Skunk spray can cause temporary blindness (15-20 minutes). If your dog appears to have been sprayed in the eyes, use a natural teardrop eyedrops such as Allergan’s Refresh to help wash them out. Don’t use anything with chemicals such as Visine in your dog’s eyes.

2. Wrap your dog in a blanket or towel to transport to the bathtub. Don’t let them roll in the carpet or on furniture! Be prepared to toss the blanket or towel that you used afterwards.

3. Wearing rubber gloves, give your dog a bath using one of the recommended formulas. Take care not to get any shampoo, oils or mixture in your dog’s eyes or mouth.

4. Dry off your dog and provide a warm place to rest after the ordeal of being skunked and having to take a bath!

If you aren’t sure what to do or there are extenuating circumstances, contact your local poison control or your emergency veterinarian to ask questions.  Good luck! Hopefully your dog will learn its lesson quick and you won’t have to do this more than once!

Herbal Dog – Using Natural Shampoo for Dogs

Tucker arrives at his new foster home

Rescue Dog Tucker arrived at his new foster home in Sacramento, California in need of a bath. Since we didn’t know Tucker and how he’d react to regular dog shampoos, he got his bath with a natural product and did just fine.

Natural pet care for your Herbal Dog is an important part of keeping them healthy. When looking for a shampoo that will be easy on your pup’s skin, be sure to choose a product that is 100% paraben and sulfate free.

Parabens are used extensively as a preservative in shampoos, cosmetics, perfumes and other products for humans and pets. They are dangerous and believed to cause cancer. So while you’re looking for hair care products for your dog that don’t contain paraben, take a look at the ingredients on your shampoo bottle as well!

Time for a Blow Dry and Styling Session!

When bathing your dog be careful not to get any shampoo in his eyes, nose or mouth. Have a large, warm towel at the ready for drying him off. Tucker let us use a hair dryer set on low to blow dry his outrageous looking hair after his bath but he would only tolerate it for a few minutes. He was left to air dry by the heater after that with some additional rub downs with a towel.

Use a natural, clean formula shampoo for your dog that is scent and perfume free to help avoid allergic reactions such as skin rash or sneezing from the perfumes.

A Nap is in Order after the Bath Ordeal

All tuckered out after his bath experience and arriving at his new foster home, Tucker settled down on a soft blanket in his kennel for the night. I think he needs a trip to the beauty parlor next, how about you?

My favorite natural pet care products are made by Mrs. Meyers but recently I’ve been having trouble finding the Mrs. Meyers pet care products. The shampoo we like is Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense for Pets.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.
